This new shingles vaccine is a non-live recombinant vaccine that contains a specific viral protein called glycoprotein E instead of the live varicella-zoster virus.

• 91.2% effective in preventing postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).
• Long-term follow-up shows the vaccine remains 89% effective in preventing shingles over 10 years.

Vaccination Guidelines:

• Adults aged 50+: Recommended to receive 2 intramuscular doses (upper arm), spaced 2–6 months apart.
• Individuals 18+ with a higher risk of shingles: Recommended for those with weakened immune systems, such as those taking steroids or undergoing radiation or chemotherapy. These individuals should receive 2 doses, spaced 1–2 months apart.
• Since the vaccine does not contain live virus, it is safe for individuals with compromised or weakened immune systems.
• The shingles vaccine can be administered regardless of prior chickenpox infection. There is no need to check for varicella immunity (IgG) before vaccination.
• If the patient has had shingles before, the vaccine can still be administered, but it should be given at least 6 months after recovery.
• If the patient does not meet the recommended age for the shingles vaccine, the varicella vaccine (chickenpox vaccine) may be considered. The shingles vaccine is not recommended to prevent chickenpox.
